Are you smarter than a 5th grader?

Did you see the new show on Fox? Are you smarter than a 5th grader! Is America really that stupid? Tonight, a graduate of UCLA had to rely on a 5th grader for each of his 3 questions he was asked! And when we was out of cheats? He dropped out of school, took the money that the 5th grader earned him, and said, "I am not as smart as a 5th grader."
Its an entertaining show, but it is kinda sad. Especially since I was stumped on some of the questions myself! AAAHHHHH! Another example of useless information.

That was very sad, I agree. I can't decide if it was worse that we all forget these simple things that we probably all wrote in on a million fill-in-the-blank worksheets or that we forget these things because we don't ever use them after the worksheets are turned in. Does that mean we are wasting time in school? I know that is not the case, because we all need to learn how to read, spell, and interact with others, but how much of what we are forced to learn and held to a grading scale during our years in school is useless? Or is sad that because we are "forced" to go to school, see the grade as the only outcome, cram to learn it, take the test and flush it all away to start cramming for the next one. I wonder what the show would be like in places around the world in which schooling is seen as more of a privilege. The gentleman from UCLA was a history major, had a 3.0 GPA in college and then went on to law school. He didn't know who the first president of the United States to be impeached was...a US HISTORY major! All five of the fifth graders got it right. As funny as the show was, I agree it was a little disturbing. But then again, maybe that was because most of the answers escaped me as well.
